Susan Ellenton’s painting practice is rooted in the metaphysics of improvisation. Her dynamic and innovative oils invite shifting sensations of meaning being found, made and unmade.

She often begins by simply developing a field of colour - slathering, smudging, scratching and ragging - for the pure pleasure of messing about with pigments and oil. Hot glue gun, squeeze bottle and a paintbrush on a broomstick are her drawing tools. Textural lines simultaneously limit and liberate Susan’s image-making as fragments of stories emerge and recede.

Ellenton’s paintings have been featured in high school textbooks, as CD covers and in educational displays for the CRD. Most recently her art was chosen for a special edition of India’s leading literary magazine Atlas. With three solo shows under her belt, overseas publication and paintings in private collections in Toronto, India and New York, Ellenton is emerging as a strong fresh voice in Canadian art. She makes her home in Victoria BC.
