what is fine silver? (and other frequently asked questions) What exactly is “Fine Silver”? Fine Silver is the purest form of silver available - 99.9% pure. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper or other metals. Jewelry made of fine silver is softer than sterling, and more precious. What is “Sintering”? Pulverized metal - in this case silver - is held at a temperature well below its melting point until the particles adhere to one another, creating one solid piece. This technique enables the creation of precious metal jewelry with a high degree of surface detail. What is “Keum-boo”? Keum-boo is an ancient Korean technique for adhering gold to silver - I love the effect. Unlike gold leaf (which is much thinner, and bonded only by friction and/or glue) keum-boo involves high temperature diffusion of the gold molecules into the surface of the silver. I use 23.5 karat gold (24 karat gold is 100% gold). What is a Patina? The surface of silver (and copper and some other metals) will change colour in the presence of certain chemicals in the air, such as sulphur. When this happens naturally, we call it tarnish. When it is purposely induced, we call it a patina. I usually add a thin layer of beeswax or carnauba over a patina to preserve the effect. How can I keep my silver shiny? Wear it! Seriously, the subtle friction of everyday wear will help to keep your silver from tarnishing. Storing it an airtight container (ziplock bag) will also help, as will an anti-tarnish container - ask me about these. Silver polish works too. For shining up only the highlights on a patinated piece, wrap a small piece of polishing cloth tightly around a flat stick.
