the fine art of improvisation
Spot On
This series started by accident, as I was applying black gesso with the intention of underpainting my whole canvas black. The artless paint-lines falling from my squeeze bottle were so engaging I began a prolonged experiment with these. When I first began overpainting in oils, the results mostly obliterated the original black gesso imagery, but more recently I’ve simplified and returned to predominantly transparent oils. Strongly influenced by Inuit printmaking, the paintings of ‘Spot On’ are often particularly joyous. Many of these are featured in my current show.
